 안녕하세요! [겜덕 연구소]를 운영하고 있는 조기자입니다. 이번에도 레트로 게임 전문가이신 검떠 님을 모셨습니다. 이번 시간에는 게임 매니아들이라면 한 번쯤 고민을 해봐야 하는, CRT 모니터 전용 게임 책상을 만드는 부분에 대해 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.

 조기자 : 안녕하세요 검떠님, 반갑습니다. 레트로 게임 매니아들에게 꼭 필요한 디스플레이, 바로 CRT 모니터입니다. 그것도 90년대 중반에 PC 용으로 쓰던 CRT 모니터들은 아쉽게도 저해상도를 지원하지 않죠. 최저 해상도가 640 480 이다보니, 옛날 320 240 해상도로 나오는 게임을 즐기긴 무리가 있지요. 
 검떠: 그렇습니다. 그래서 보통 저해상도가 출력이 되는 예전 CRT 모니터들, 즉 수평주파수 15khz 를 지원하면서도 RGB 입력이 가능한 모니터들이 귀한 취급을 받게 되었죠.

 검떠: 일단 이 CRT RGB 모니터는, 사실 많은 분들이 접한 모니터죠. 당장 오락실에 가면 보이는 화면이 29인치 칼라 CRT로 RGB 연결이었거든요. 어렸을 때 크라운이라고 해서 게임기통에 오락실 게임을 많이 해보셨을 거잖아요.
 선명한 스캔라인과 함께 미려한 칼라 그래픽으로 사람들을 유혹했던 그 시절을 잊지 못하는 분들에게는 CRT 모니터가 꼭 필요한 것이죠.

 조기자: 하지만 유부남에게는 필연적인 문제가 생기죠. 바로 공간이 없다는 것입니다. 아이들도 커가고 나만의 공간을 크게 확보할 수 없다보니, CRT 모니터를 놓을만한 여력이 없어지는 것이거든요. 
 그래서 고민하게 된 것이 바로 책상을 CRT 모니터와 LCD 모니터 공용으로 사용할 수 없을까? 라는 것이었습니다. 
 검떠: 그렇죠. 이러한 작업을 실행하신 분이 계시죠. 저희는 그 분의 개조기를 빌려온 것이구요.
 조기자: 그렇습니다. 작업은 과거에 매직랩 코리아에서 출시한 '매직 캐비넷'으로 진행했다고 합니다. 매직 캐비넷은 지금은 단종되어서 아주 가끔 게임 커뮤니티에서 중고로만 구입할 수 있는 게임 전용 책상이죠.

 검떠: 이러한 매직 캐비넷도 사실은 LCD를 올려놓고 PC와 게임기를 겸해서 즐기는 형태가 되는 것인데요, 여기에다가 뒤쪽에 CRT 모니터를 얹을 수 있는 기믹을 만드는 개조를 진행하게 되었다.. 이거군요.
 조기자: 그렇습니다. 개조기가 생각보다 훨씬 심플하기도 하고 신박하기도 하고 그랬습니다. 나름대로 운치가 있었다고나 할까요. 
 우선 CRT를 거치해야 하니, 프로파일을 재단하는 것부터 시작됩니다.

 조기자: 프로파일이라는 게.. 보니까 꽤나 편리하더라고요. 일단 엄청 튼튼해서 CRT 모니터 올리는 정도로는 아무 부담이 없을 정도고 가공이나 체결도 쉬워 보였습니다.
 일단 드릴로 원하는 부분에 구멍을 뚫는 게 중요하더군요. 수치를 잘 재서 구멍을 뚫고 거기에 와셔를 넣어서 고정하는 방식입니다.

 조기자: 이렇게 프로파일을 재단한 후에는 바로 조립을 하게 됩니다. 기본적으로 매직캐비넷 뒤쪽에 CRT 모니터를 얹어놓고, 앞쪽에 LCD 모니터를 거치하는 방식이죠.

 이런 형태로 작업이 진행되었는데요, 매직 캐비넷에 장착되면 굉장히 기묘한 모습이 되더군요.

 검떠: 아.. 이렇게 매직캐비넷 뒤쪽으로 깔아놓는 구조가 되는군요. 앞서서 전혀 이해가 되지 않았는데, 이제 이해가 되었습니다. 
 조기자: 그렇죠. 뒤쪽에 CRT 모니터를 얹어야 하니까요. 뒤에 홈에다가 저 기둥을 탈착해서 끼워넣는 형태가 되는 겁니다. 보시면 뒤쪽이 좀 낮죠. 
 CRT 모니터가 살짝 위쪽으로 기울어진 각도여야 하니까 이렇게 재단이 된 것이고, 뒤쪽에 CRT 모니터가 흘러 내려가지 않도록 받침도 만들어진 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

 검떠: 이야~ 이런 느낌이군요 매직캐비넷과 합쳐진 모습인데, 은근히 나쁘지 않은데요? 모니터는 20인치 RGB 모니터인가요?
 조기자: 네 그렇습니다. 저 모니터는 외관을 보니 샤프의 20인치 3모드 모니터군요. 샤프가 특유의 섀도우 마스크로 쨍한 감이 있습니다. 특히 24khz 기판을 연결하면 너무 너무 화면이 좋아보이죠. 
 아마 21CD 모델이거나 21HD 모델로 사료됩니다.

 검떠: 이 모니터.. 가격도 비싸겠죠? 
 조기자: 그렇죠.. 일본에서 구해야 하는데, 최소 100만 원이 넘는다는 것만 아시면 되겠네요. 이제는 정말 귀해져서 구할 수 없다는 게 문제입니다.
 그리고.. 이렇게 한 다음에는 이제 LCD 모니터를 부착해야 되겠죠. 또 다시 프로파일이 투입됩니다. LCD 모니터를 고정시키기 위해 프로파일로 뼈대를 만들고, 거기에 LCD 모니터를 달아주는 거죠.

 검떠: 오오 이렇게 완성된 건가요? 
 조기자: 그렇습니다. LCD는 24인치 정도 되는 모델 같아 보입니다. 보면 대략 28인치 정도도 얹어놓을 수 있을 것 같아보이네요. 
 이렇게 평소에는 PC와 LCD로 즐기다가, 게임을 하고 싶을 때에는 LCD 모니터를 뒤로 넘기고 CRT 모니터로 게임을 하는 구조가 되겠네요. 
 유부남이 좁은 공간에서 최고의 게임 환경을 구축하기 위한 눈물 겨운 사투.. 라고 할까요. 그런 느낌이 물씬 드는군요

 검떠: 이야.. 이렇게 보니 생각보다 실용성이 꽤 있겠다.. 라는 생각이 드는군요. 
 조기자: 그렇습니다. 매직캐비넷 자체가 게임 캐비넷과 일반 작업용 책상을 겸용으로 쓰도록 제작된 캐비넷이니까요. 거기에 한 술 더 떠서 CRT와 LCD 모니터를 겸용으로 쓰게 하는 구성도 재미있는 것 같습니다.

 어른아2 라는 분인데요, 미국에 서식하시는 리듬 게임 매니아분입니다. 이분이 또 특제 매직캐비넷으로 커스텀하셨더라구요. 보면 엄청납니다.

 검떠: 우와~ 일반 매직캐비넷 보다 훨~씬 넓은데요? 광활합니다!!
 조기자: 그렇죠? 일반 매직캐비넷보다 2배는 되는 너비를 자랑합니다. 일반 뷰릭스 배열을 그대로 심었는데, 개인적으로는 조금 1P와 2P를 띄웠어도 되지 않았나 생각이 들지만.. 뭐. 화면 때문에 붙인 것일테니까요. 넓어서 시원시원한 느낌이 들지요.
 그리고 이분은 리듬 게임 매니아라고 말씀드렸는데, 화면을 뒤집으니 일반 책상이 아니라, 전문 리듬게임 컨트롤러가 등장하더군요.
