 그룹 클로즈유어아이즈(CLOSE YOUR EYES, 이하 클유아)가 데뷔 1주년과 동시에 디지털 싱글 ‘오버익스포즈드(OVEREXPOSED)’로 돌아왔다. 1년 사이 팬들을 향한 멤버들의 사랑은 더 깊어졌다.

 ‘오버익스포즈드’는 제목 그대로, 강한 플래시로 인해 피사체가 흐릿해지는 현상을 모티브로 삼은 앨범이다. 모든 것이 하얗게 날아가 버릴지 모를 찰나의 순간 속에서도, 가장 멋진 포즈로 그 순간의 잔상을 남겨두겠다는 메시지다. 이러한 외침은 클유아(전민욱 마징시앙 장여준 김성민 송승호 켄신 서경배)가 활동 기한이 정해진 프로젝트 그룹이라는 한계를 넘어, 매 순간을 당당하고 의미 있게 채우겠다는 선언과도 같다.

 타이틀곡 ‘포즈(POSE)’는 브라질리언 바일레펑크와 2000년대 힙합을 결합한 에너제틱한 곡이다. 멤버들은 “강하면서도 여유로운 바이브를 담아 우리를 대중에게 확실히 각인시키고 싶다”고 밝혔다. 특히 이번 활동에서는 ‘셔터 춤’으로 명명된 퍼포먼스와 더불어 멤버들의 성숙해진 표정 연기가 돋보인다. 2007년생 켄신은 “귀여운 모습에서 벗어나 ‘오빠’가 됐다는 말을 듣고 싶어서 여유 있는 표정을 많이 연습했다”면서도 특유의 사랑스러운 미소는 감추지 못했다.

 클유아는 데뷔 때부터 ‘명곡 맛집’으로 불리며 매 앨범 뚜렷한 음악적 성장을 증명해왔다. 데뷔 앨범 ‘이터널티(ETERNALT)’에서 ‘내 안의 모든 시와 소설은’ ‘너를 담은 이 영화에 나의 가사가 자막이 돼’ 등의 곡을 통해 문학적 서정성을 구축하며 팀의 서사를 시작한 것이 첫걸음이었다. 이후 미니 2집 ‘스노이 서머(Snowy Summer)’에서는 청량한 팝 사운드로 변신, 여름의 눈이라는 역설적인 감성을 ‘유(ㅠ)’와 같은 중의적인 메시지로 확장해내며 대중성과 음악성을 동시에 확보했다.

 변화는 여기서 멈추지 않았다. 3집 ‘블랙아웃(blackout)’에 이르러서는 ‘엑스(X)’와 ‘2.0’을 통해 다크한 색채와 파워풀한 퍼포먼스를 전면에 내세우며 팀의 한계를 시험했다. 클유아가 음악적으로 호평받는 이유도 이처럼 각 앨범 장르의 통일성은 유지하되, 다음 앨범으로 넘어갈 때는 낯선 영역으로의 도전을 두려워하지 않는 진취적인 태도 때문이다.

 그 배경에는 단단한 팀워크가 있다. 오디션 프로그램 출신인 일곱 명의 멤버가 하나의 목소리를 낼 수 있는 원동력은 리더 전민욱을 중심으로 한 철저한 자기 객관화와 소통에 있다. 송승호는 “민욱이 형이 항상 ‘우리만큼이나 데뷔하고 싶었던 연습생들이 많은데, 그들을 대신해서 우리가 데뷔한 것 아니냐. 그만큼 더 열심히 해야 한다’며 중심을 잡아준다”고 전했다. 또한 정기적인 팀 회의를 통해 서운함이 쌓이기 전 대화로 풀어내는 문화는 클유아가 다툼 없이 달려온 비결이다.

 특히 팬덤은 이들이 무대 위에 서야 할 의미 그 자체다. 김성민은 “‘언제나 너를 사랑할 거야’라는 말을 들은 적 있다”며 “‘내가 뭐라고 나를 이렇게까지’라는 생각이 들면서, 그 진심에 보답하기 위해 더 열심히 해야겠다는 마음이 들었다”고 고백했다. 마징시앙 역시 평소의 스트레스 해소법을 묻자 “팬분들과 대화할 때”라고 답했을 정도다. 켄신 또한 자신을 위해 팬들이 일본어로 정성껏 써준 편지를 보며, 그들이 주는 사랑의 힘이 생각보다 훨씬 크다는 사실을 깨달았다.

 프로젝트 그룹인 만큼 클유아의 활동 기간은 끝이 정해져 있다. 그래서 이들의 시간은 더욱 소중하게 흐른다. 서경배는 10년 뒤 클유아가 “낭만이 있었던 팀”으로 기억되길 바란다고 답했다. 마징시앙은 자신들이 그랬던 것처럼 10년 뒤에는 오디션 프로그램의 연습생들이 클유아의 무대를 커버하는 롤모델이 되어 있길 소망했다. 하얗게 타버릴 찰나일지라도, 정해진 끝을 두려워하지 않는 일곱 소년의 행보는 그 자체로 하나의 뜨거운 낭만이 되고 있다. roku@sportsseoul.com
