 [스포츠서울 | 이승록 기자] 방탄소년단의 컴백에 전 세계의 이목이 쏠리고 있다. 멤버 전원 군 복무를 마치고 3년여 만에 돌아온다는 기대를 넘어, K팝 산업이 직면한 위기론 속에서 이들이 다시 한번 새로운 역사를 세울지 주목된다.
 소속사 빅히트 뮤직은 방탄소년단이 오는 3월 20일 오후 1시 새 정규 앨범을 발매한다고 최근 공식 발표했다. 이번 신보는 지난 2022년 발표한 앤솔러지 앨범 ‘프루프(Proof)’ 이후 3년 9개월 만의 완전체 활동이다. 정규 앨범으로는 2020년 ‘맵 오브 더 소울 : 7(MAP OF THE SOUL : 7)’ 이후 무려 6년 만이다. 총 14개 트랙으로 구성돼 오랜 시간 완전체를 기다려온 팬덤 ‘아미(ARMY)’에게 특별한 선물이 될 것으로 보인다.

 신보 발표와 함께 대규모 월드투어도 예고됐다. 구체적인 일정은 베일에 싸여 있으나, 소위 ‘군백기’가 길었던 만큼 역대 최대 규모의 글로벌 투어가 될 것이라는 관측이 지배적이다. 미국 뉴욕타임스는 “방탄소년단의 부상과 지배력이 지난 10년 동안의 K팝 인기에 큰 영향을 줬다. 이들은 음악적 재능과 성실함, 친근감으로 K팝 홍보대사 역할을 완벽하게 해냈다”며 “새 앨범과 투어는 산업 전반에 다시 한번 활력을 불어넣는 결정적 계기가 될 것”이라고 내다봤다.

 K팝 본고장 한국에서의 프로모션 역시 시작됐다. 서울의 상징 중 하나인 세종문화회관 계단은 이미 방탄소년단의 신보 로고와 발매일로 채워져 축제 분위기를 조성하고 있다. 빅히트 뮤직은 “방탄소년단은 한국에서 시작해 전 세계를 무대로 활동하는 팀으로 성장했다. 오랜만에 완전체로 컴백하는 만큼 이들의 문화적 뿌리인 한국 그것도 서울 한복판에서 오프라인 프로모션을 개최했다”며 ”뉴욕, 도쿄, 런던 등 전 세계 주요 도시로 옥외 광고를 확장할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

 하지만 화려한 기대 이면에는 막중한 책임감도 공존한다. 방탄소년단이 자리를 비운 사이 K팝 내수시장에는 ‘위기’ 경고등이 켜진 상황이다. 최근 영국 가디언은 한국 문화계를 진단하는 분석 기사를 통해 K팝 실물 음반 판매량이 10년 만에 처음으로 하락세로 돌아섰다고 지적했다. 그 원인으로 가디언은 K팝 기획사들이 글로벌 투어로 방향을 전환하고, 대중에게 널리 알려지는 대신 열성적인 코어 팬덤에만 집중했기 때문이라고 짚었다.

 실제로 방탄소년단 이후 후배 그룹들이 빌보드 차트 등 글로벌에서 선전하고 있음에도 불구하고, 국내 시장의 체감 온도는 차갑게 식었다는 평가가 나온다. 앨범 판매량이 100만 장을 훌쩍 넘는 밀리언셀러가 속출하지만, 과거 방탄소년단의 ‘봄날’이나 ‘피 땀 눈물’처럼 전 세대가 함께 즐기는 메가 히트곡은 사라졌다는 비판이 나온다. 해외 성과에 치중하느라 국내 대중을 붙잡는 데 소홀했기 때문이라는 분석이다.

 방탄소년단의 리더 RM은 지난해 10월 경주 APEC CEO 서밋 기조연설에서 K팝을 ‘비빔밥’에 비유하며 그 성공 요인으로 “특정 문화의 우월성에서 비롯된 것이 아니다”라며 “한국 고유의 정체성을 지키면서도 다양성을 존중하고, 세계의 문화를 폭넓게 수용했기 때문”이라고 강조한 바 있다.
 결국 방탄소년단의 이번 컴백은 K팝이 잃어버린 대중성과 포용성을 회복할 수 있을지 가늠하는 중요한 시험대가 될 전망이다. K팝 산업의 전성기를 이끈 방탄소년단이 위기론을 잠재우고 K팝 제2의 서막을 열 해법을 제시할지 업계가 주목하고 있다. roku@sportsseoul.com
